Self Reflection Essay for Technical Description
For this technical description, finding my motivation was effortless. As a child, I have always wondered how the BIC 4-Color Pen functioned. It was quite popular when I was in elementary school/middle school. However, I never went out of my way as I did for this assignment to purchase my own BIC 4-Color Pen, disassemble then reassemble it, search up videos, and read reviews on it to understand how it functioned. My motivation was to answer and learn about a curiosity I had since I was a child. My purpose for this technical description was to persuade and show the audience that this pen was revolutionary and better than most pens in cost-wise and effectiveness. In this assignment, the audience was customers. For that reason, I had to make sure the customers understood every part of the pen, the material of the parts in the pen to know how durable and long-lasting the pen is, and how it has similar functions to other multi-colored pens but only the BIC 4-Color Pen is the best for its price. Since I am trying to please and persuade valued customers, I had to be professional and use a formal tone in my writing.
For this assignment, I improved on some of the Course Learning Outcomes, such as engaging in collaborative and social aspects of the writing process. I had more people revise my paper instead of only the few classmates in my peer review group. I also worked with other classmates, and incorporated the ideas we would give each other into my own writing, such as, the format and how I can provide the best angles for the images of the parts. Every person that revised my paper asked important questions that helped me be more descriptive in my writing. With those questions made me do more research, and improve on another Course Learning Outcome of strengthing my practices using various online databases and the Internet to locate my information. On my first run of writing the paper, I had about 4 sources, at the end of my final piece, I had 10 sources. I also believe I improved on another Course Learning Outcome of enhancing strategies for reading, revising, and editing when revising peoples’ writing than just the people in my peer review group. One final Course Learning Outcome I improved on was citing sources. I was able to learn how to cite photographs taken by myself and from online databases and also how to cite videos that I found useful to my research.
